Esraj (west Bengal)

Overview

The Esraj is a traditional Indian stringed instrument renowned for its soulful and melodic qualities, particularly in Indian classical music. It has its roots in the North Indian states of Bengal and Punjab and holds a significant place in the musical traditions of these regions. 

Resembling a cross between a sitar and a sarangi, the Esraj features a wooden body with a round, hollow back, a long neck, and metal strings that are played with a bow. It typically has around 20 metal strings that are played with a bow made of horsehair, similar to those used with a violin or cello.

One of the distinctive features of the Esraj is its sympathetic strings, which run beneath the main playing strings. These sympathetic strings resonate when the main strings are played, adding depth and resonance to the instrument's sound.
