Yazh Instruments

Overview

The Yazh, an emblematic stringed instrument from Tamil Nadu, India, dates back to the Sangam era, showcasing the rich musical heritage of ancient Tamil culture. Crafted from jackfruit wood and characterized by its distinctive Yali-shaped body, the Yazh comes in various forms, including the seven-stringed Sapthaswara Yazh and the more extensive Periyazh. This instrument is played by plucking the strings with a plectrum, producing a range of melodious sounds that were once integral to the scholarly and elite circles of Tamil society.
